Many Detroit Red Wings fans have wondered why on earth Anthony Mantha was sent down to the Grand Rapids Griffins after posting three goals in five preseason games. Some were convinced that he needed a little more seasoning before making the permanent jump to the National Hockey League, while others pointed their finger at the organization’s unwillingness to ice a young team capable of leading the inevitable youth movement.

Either way, the 22-year-old is bent on proving that he belongs with the big boys.

After scoring in all three Griffins games to start the season, Mantha became the fourth player in the history of Grand Rapids to record three power play goals in the same match last night. He netted a hat trick in decisive fashion, showcasing his powerful and accurate shot and now has five goals in three games to lead the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate in scoring.
