Report: Rangers make a decision on Chytil’s future

NHL or AHL? Where’s the right spot for this kid?

New York Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton isn’t making any rash decisions when it comes to youngster Filip Chytil. Despite the slow start to the season for the Rangers’ first round selection in 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Chytil isn’t going anywhere.

“The contract slide hasn’t been a focus of ours,” the Gorton said following Monday’s practice. “We’re not thinking about Hartford for Filip. We think he’s in the right place.”

The “contract slide” Gorton refers to is a little known clause that allows NHL teams to save a year on a European players’ contract if he plays out the campaign in the American Hockey League, like with the Rangers’ Hartford WolfPack affiliate. This isn’t a concern for Gorton and the Rangers management and it looks as if Chytil will stick with the Rangers for good… at least for now.

The 19 year old Czech centre has just two assists in his first eight games this season, but hasn’t looked out of place playing mostly on the wing alongside Kevin Hayes and Mats Zuccarello. Hopefully the youngster can find his offensive touch and take the next step in his development with the Rangers this season.
