Report: RFA and team more than $3 million apart in negotiations

According to a report from Sportsnet analyst and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the New York Islanders and restricted free-agent defenseman Calvin de Haan are far apart in contract negotiations.

That’s… a bit of a gap. While it’s expected that sides will take polar opposite stances during negotiations in the hopes of meeting in the middle, a nearly $3 million divide may be too wide for the sides to settle outside of arbitration.

The 26-year-old blue liner put up a career high five goals and 25 points in 82 games with the Islanders last season. He’s coming off a three-year contract that paid him an annual salary of $1.96 million per season, making the current offer a pay cut. Yeesh.
