There is a concerning development surrounding the earthquake that struck off the coast of Puerto Rico on Saturday.

First, according to a report from NBC a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Puerto Rico on Saturday, the quake is believed to have occurred at a depth of 8 miles. It struck around the southern coastal town of Guayanilla, which is a troubling sign given that this is close to the epicenter of some of the other quakes that have been hammering Puerto Rico daily for nearly a full month now. To make matters worse Puerto Rico was hit by heavy rains on Friday and a number of people that were occupying earthquake shelters were forced to evacuate as those shelters were flooded, leaving them much more vulnerable to today's quake.

Interestingly enough there may be a hockey twist to this story as well given that there may be as many as 4 National Hockey League players currently in Puerto Rico over the All Star break. According to a report from Boston Bruins beat reporter Jimmy Murphy, 4 members of the Bruins roster were scheduled to vacation in Puerto Rico over the break, and as a result they may have been impacted by this quake. The 4 Bruins are Jake DeBruskCharlie MCavoyAnders Bjork and Sean Kuraly.

From Murphy:

Jake DeBrusk, Sean Kuraly, Anders Bjork and Charlie McAvoy were scheduled to spend their All-Star break in Puerto Rico. Here's hoping they and everyone on this island that has suffered enough are OK!

I certainly share Murphy's sentiment that hopefully everyone will be ok, but we are still calling this one a rumor for now so don't get too concerned just yet. Murphy's wording is important here as he suggests the players were scheduled to be in Puerto Rico for the break, but that does not necessarily mean that they ended up going in the end. Until we get additional confirmation regarding the whereabouts of one, or more, of these players this story will remain merely a rumor at this time.

It certainly would put a damper on the NHL's All Star weekend if one of their players turned out to be injured in a natural disaster.
