The Andreas Athanasiou saga isn't over yet - but according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, it should be over "sooner rather than later". And the kid's fate should ultimately be a new contract signed with the Detroit Red Wings.
And when that happens, the insider expects that GM Ken Holland will be forced to move a forward out of Detroit - he speculates that it could be Riley Sheahan.
Athanasiou is currently skating in Switzerland with HC Lugano but there's no expectation that he will sign a contract there. There is the possibility of him signing with a KHL team for the year and participate in the winter olympics, but it seems more likely that he'll eventually make his return to Michigan.
The 23-year-old has 43 points in 101 career regular season games.
Any way you shake it, it's going to be an awkward situation when he returns.
