Rumor: Oilers and Predators linked in trade talks

Does Ken Holland have a trick up his sleeve?

No matter how you look at it, the 2018-19 season was a disappointing one for the Nashville Predators. The team failed to make it past the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in four seasons and it looked absolutely anemic in their six game series against the Dallas Stars.

Most fans and analysts expect longtime Preds general manager David Poole to make some changes this offseason, particularly on defence. While superstar P.K. Subban has been mentioned as a possible trading chip, Edmonton Oilers insider Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal recently tossed out Ryan Ellis as a potential target for new Oilers GM Ken Holland.

No doubt that Ellis would fit in nicely on the Oilers’ blue line, but Poile isn’t going to just give away his team’s heart and soul without getting a valuable player back. So… who could Holland offer up?

The Oilers have picks and prospects to offer up, but despite a disappointing season the Preds are still very much a Cup contender moving forward. They won’t be happy with spare parts and future considerations. Certainly Jesse Puljujarvi could peak their interest, but forward Ryan Nugent Hopkins is likely even more appealing.

For now it’s important to note that any talk about a Oilers and Preds deal is pure speculation, but as we head into the offseason don’t be surprised if the talk around these two teams begins to pick up.
