This could potentially be catastrophic news for the Pittsburgh Penguins, although admittedly it is still far too early to tell.

First and foremost, according to a report from Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan has confirmed that both Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and Penguins forward Bryan Rust have each suffered an injury during the final game of the preseason. The Penguins of course were facing off against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night and they would eventually fall to the Sabres by a score of 3 - 2, however no one will be talking about an exhibition loss considering the gravity of the injury news coming out of this game.

If you are looking for a silver lining at this time I do have one for you. According to Sullivan both players had to leave the game after being struck by a shot on the ice and as of right now both players are still being evaluated. I suppose you could suggest that Sullivan calling these injuries at all is a bad sign to begin with, but the fact that the Penguins are waiting for updates before providing more information is a good sign. After all at the end of the day both of these injuries could prove to be minor in nature and the Penguins could come out of this only a little worse for ware.

There are some good reasons for concern as well however. Rust was injured late in the game when he blocked a shot from Sabres defenseman Colin Miller and he would leave the game in the third period, Crosby however was struck by a shot from Sabres defenseman Marco ScandellaScandella is widely recognized as one of the most powerful shooters in the game today, and being struck by one of his shots can not feel good even at the absolute best of times. Furthermore there are reports that Crosby was spotted limping as he left the arena on Saturday night, although there were no crutches or any walking boot to be seen which is probably a good sign.

Stay tuned for more details on this one, obviously when it involves players of this magnitude we will be right on top of it.
