"It's not good."

That was the prognosis from Chicago head coach Jeremy Colliton last night after defenseman Calvin de Haan left the game in the first period against Vegas. De Haan took a hit in the neutral zone from Mark Stone, who was penalized for interference on the play, then fell awkwardly and immediately went to the locker room. He would not return to the game. It was later revealed that he re-injured his right shoulder, the same one he had surgery on back in May that required months of recovery time.

Colliton told reporters after the game de Haan will travel back to Chicago for further evaluation and he’s not optimistic about a quick return to the lineup.

De Haan had taken on extra minutes in recent games to fill in gaps left by injuries to Duncan Keith (groin) and Olli Maatta (flu-like symptoms). Should de Haan miss significant time, which seems likely given Collitan’s early evaluation, the Blackhawks defensive depth is really going to be tested as prospects are going to be getting much more ice time. Chicago had taken eight defensemen with the team on the current three game road trip. That includes top prospect Adam Boqvist. As it stands right now, another call up is not needed. However, with so much uncertainty surrounding Maatta and when, exactly, he may be ready to get back in the lineup, that could change quickly.

De Haan has a goal and five assists in 29 games this season. Perhaps his biggest contribution is that he’s plus-10 on a team with a goal differential of minus-14. De Haan had been averaging just under 20 minutes a game in 2019-20, meaning someone is likely going to have some minutes added to their time once the team’s medical staff determines just how much time he’s going to miss.
