Tony DeAngelo is begging the Rangers to play

No one is interested in acquiring the defenseman who won’t be back in New York…

Ever since New York Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton made it clear on that defenseman Tony DeAngelo has played his final game with the club in early February, fans have been waiting to see him traded to another team.

But nothing has happened, so much so that Frank Seravalli reported on last night’s Insider Trading on TSN that since there are no takers for DeAngelo he has let it be known to the Rangers he’d be interested in a loan to any AHL team.

However, the Rangers don’t want him in Hartford either and so a move will need to take place. Here is how Seravalli explained it:

“Tony DeAngelo has expressed interest in a loan to the American Hockey League. That’s what he let the Rangers know, that he’d like to get playing again, he’s been skating for the last month to this point on his own. He’s willing to accept a loan to any AHL franchise and I believe the Rangers are interested in facilitating that, but it would take someone else stepping up to do so. Because the Rangers have let him know he’s not welcome in Hartford, the ties have been cut with the entire Rangers organization to this point.”

At the beginning of February, DeAngelo was placed on waivers and went unclaimed. This happened after New York’s overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. DeAngelo and goaltender Alexandar Georgiev were involved in an altercation that was quickly broken up by a teammate. And this came after a long history of unapologetic history of abuse and bigotry, Donald Trump support and COVID-19 denialism…

It’s been a rapid descent for DeAngelo, but rival teams see the potential in him. Last season, he recorded a career-high 15 goals and 53 points in 68 games. He posted just one assist and is minus-6 in six games this year while averaging 18:29 of ice time. DeAngelo signed a two-year, $9.6 million contract in October and carries a $4.8 million cap hit
