The Montreal Canadiens currently have a log jam at the forward position and with things about to get worse in the coming days it looks like the Canadiens and general manager Marc Bergevin may be looking to get a little creative on the trade front.

The Canadiens currently have 14 forwards on their roster and that has resulted in players like veteran Tomas Plekanec and ?Nikita Scherbak sitting in the press box night after night, but things are about to get considerably worse. The Canadiens are expected to get both forwards Jacob de la Rose as well as Nick Deslauriers back from injury in relatively short order and that will force the Habs to either place a player on waivers to send him down to the American Hockey League, or alternatively will force general manager Marc Bergevin to make a trade.

The possibility of sending a players to the waiver wire likely is not all that appealing to Bergevin and it seems more than fair to suggest that a trade may be his first priority here. On this week's edition of insider trading TSN insider Bob McKenzie revealed that he has in fact heard rumblings that suggest Bergevin may already be actively calling other teams to try and orchestrate a deal before he ends up in the aforementioned situation.

"Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin has let his 31 general manager colleagues know that he is available for business in terms of potentially trading a forward," said McKenzie as per TSN. "On any given night,  and  have been healthy scratches sitting in the press box and with Nick Deslauriers soon expected to come back off injury as well as Jacob de la Rose, the Canadiens could have 16 healthy forwards.  Somebody could go down on waivers, but they may also lose somebody for nothing, so Marc Bergevin is being a little preemptive here and saying, hey, if you want to talk about one of my forwards, give me a call."

Now McKenzie himself did not get into any specifics regarding who it is that the Canadiens may be looking to trade but in a recent radio interview on TSN's 690 in Montreal the Fourth Period's David Pagnotta provided some insight into who that player may be. Unsurprisingly it sounds like Bergevin and the Canadiens are trying to unload Andrew Shaw and his rather ugly contract.

"I know last season they were exploring some calls involving Andrew Shaw. It could be a scenario where they look to move him, salary wise and contract wise, in order to let one of the other guys jump into the line up on a regular basis."

Shaw has gotten off to a decent start this season with 1 goal and 1 assist for 2 points in his first 3 games of the regular season and it seems likely that the Canadiens will try to parlay that into trade value.

"I know Andrew Shaw is a guy they explored last season and a little bit in the summer. So It wouldn't surprise me to see his name start to pop up a a little more consistently until, if, the Canadiens are able to make a move."
