Very troubling statistic emerges as the Leafs plummet to the bottom of the NHL.

An ugly statistic for the Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been unable to live up to the expectations head coach Mike Babcock set for the team at the start of the season, and there are now some disturbing trends starting to emerge in their play.

Despite outworking their opponents last night the Maple Leafs were left walking away from a three to one loss on Sunday night as they were beat out by another struggling team in the Colorado Avalanche, and that unfortunately has started to become a regular occurrence for the young Leafs squad.

According to Sportsnet stats the Maple Leafs have now lost four consecutive games when recording fifty or more shots in a game, a statistic that most would expect to read the complete opposite way. While correlation certainly doesn't equal causation, one has to wonder what exactly is causes the Leafs to lose when they are so offensively dominant.

For the record Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov stopped 51 of the 52 shots the Leafs fired his way last night.
