Wayne Gretzky was almost a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

There's no questioning the fact that Wayne Gretzky is one of the most revered figures in the history of professional hockey, and for good reason, but fans in Toronto have often had a more contentious view of "The Great One" due to a certain high-sticking incident.

What many modern fans probably don't know however is how, a few years following that high-sticking incident, Wayne Gretzky almost became a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs himself. 

In a recent video piece for Sportsnet, National Hockey League reporter Scott Wilson shared some details regarding how Gretzky twice almost joined the Maple Leafs organization, once as a player and once as the team's President.
