The concept behind the NHL Winter Classic is fun and interesting, sure. But according to recent TV ratings, the interest for the event is dropping and TV stations are feeling the decreased level of passion for the once very exciting outdoor game.

There are a few reasons why interest has dropped. First, many people are still enjoying family time and holiday parties on the 1st of January, and the NHL also has to compete with football related events in America, which always seem to get people's attention more than hockey does.

Plus, the game used to be unique. One outdoor game in a fun historic venue for many many fans to attend for once in a lifetime opportunity. Now there is more than four outdoor hockey games a season, in random places in America - the unique factor is gone!

The game could also take place later in the year, possible in mid-February, when the hype of the Super Bowl and NFL is over, and focus is on hockey and the playoffs approaching.

Who knows? But with today's ratings, it might be worth a try.
