John Tortorella declares Trevor Zegras/Sunny Milano highlight goal is bad for the game!
Okay, raise your hand if you're surprised by this.
Forwards Trevor Zegras and Sonny Milano of the Anaheim Ducks combined for one of the coolest goals you'll ever see two nights ago against the Buffalo Sabres, as Zegras (who was behind the net) lifted the puck over goaltender Dustin Tokarski where it was whacked in by Milano.
Needless to say, we'll be seeing that one on the highlight reels for a long time. But, also not surprisingly, there was one figure who wasn't exactly pleased to see that, and that would be none other than former NHL bench boss John Tortorella.
While speaking with Arda Ocal and Rick DiPietro on ESPN this evening, Tortorella went so far as to say that kind of showmanship isn't good for the game.
"It's fun to watch, it's really cool but I think our game has gone so far away from what the game should be, a hard game, an honest game, it's almost gotten too showman," Tortorella opined. "I know you need to have it, you need to sell the game."
"I'm from the ilk that it's still a hard game to play and a good, honest hockey game needs to be played. I think some of this stuff can get carried away".
"I'm not trying to be a fool here but I'm not so sure it's good for the game. If you did that back in 2000, late 90's, you'd get your head taken off. It's cool, it's cool to watch but I'm not so sure it's good for the game and I stand by that".
Torts would also go on to say that had he been the Ducks coach, he'd have spoken to Zegras about the move following the game.
Does the fiery former coach have a point here, or is this just another example of his classic reputation of being curmudgeon?
