John Tortorella drops a hot take on the Zegras/Milano goal.
Torts not a big fan.
The National Hockey League had one of it's most viral moments in a very long time this week when Anaheim Ducks forwards Trevor Zegras and Sonny Milano combined for spectacular goal.
Zegras, who in my opinion deserves the lion's share of the credit for making this one happen, was working from behind the Buffalo Sabres net during the 2nd period when suddenly it looked like he was preparing to go for 'The Michigan'. Instead of looping the puck directly into the net however, Zegras used the move to set up a pass to Milano who promptly batted the puck out of the air and into the Buffalo Sabres net.
Here's the replay of the goal:
The video of the goal has been viewed well over 50 million times on social media and it has been a huge success for the National Hockey League in terms of getting eyeballs on the game, but not everyone was appreciative of the spectacular play. On Friday during the ESPN broadcast of NHL games, former NHL head coach John Tortorella was asked about the goal and he had a rather hot take to share on the topic. Not only did Tortorella argue that the play was bad for the overall health of the game, he seemed to lament the fact that the game has even gotten to this point.
"It's tremendous skilled," said Tortorella. "For Sonny Milano to even yell Michigan in the middle of a play in a game is skill. That's a skill play. My position though is... is it good for the game? I'm not so sure.
"I'm not trying to be a fool here but I'm just not so sure it's great for the game. If you did that back in the late 90s or 2000s you would get your head taken off. It's cool to watch and all that but I'm not so sure it's good for the game and I stand by that."
Perhaps the most bizarre part of Tortorella's take was his claim that he would have talked to the players following the game had this happened on a team that he was currently coaching.
"Yeah I'd have a talk with the people, I would, after the game," said Tortorella. "I'm not trying to be difficult about it, it's fun to watch and it's really cool, but I think our game has gone so far away from what the game should be. A hard game, an honest game. It's almost getting too showman, I know you need to have it, you need to sell the game, but I'm from the ilk of it's still a hard game to play and a good honest hockey game needs to be played and I think some of this stuff here you get carried away."
Tortorella acknowledges that a clip of this nature will attract new fans, but he also seems to believe it will chase some of the more old school hockey types away.
"Yes, but I think you're losing fans too," said Tortorella. "I think you're losing other fans also when you're attracting others towards this stuff."
